The honorable Prime Minister of Mauritius, Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, conferred this award to Rani during the course of Mauritius Cinema Week, a special film festival that Mauritius is hosting currently. This festival is part of the build-up to the 50th year of Independence of the Republic of Mauritius from British Rule. The film festival saluted close cultural and historical ties to both India and France on the awards evening.  Rani received the award along with the popular French actress, Emmanuelle Beart who was also given the same honor.

Speaking about the award, Rani Mukerji said, “I am humbled, thankful and proud that Mauritius has given me such honor and love with this Outstanding Contribution to Cinema Award. This festival brings some really good cinema and also provides a rare chance for French and Indian cinema to be celebrated together. Many of my films like Bichhoo, Hello Brother, and Kuch Kuch Hota Hain have been shot here.  I love the pristine natural scenery and vibrant culture of Mauritius. I am thankful that those of Indian origin have given me such affection. We share a common history of colonialism and struggle for independence. In the years to come, I hope we also find common ground in our arts and cinema.”

The festival curated films that celebrate the struggle and beauty of freedom of individuals and nations.  The awards evening featured glimpses of classic Mauritian culture and had dignitaries from the thriving nation applauding Rani Mukerji. Her warm presence and winsome speech on the occasion won over this gracious audience, and fans thronged for a glimpse of their queen during the evening.

On the work front, Rani Mukerji will be next seen in YRF's Hichki. Directed by Siddharth P Malhotra, it is slated to release on February 23, 2018.
