Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre, Peddar Road on the eve of Christmas conducted a session on ‘Challenging Challenges’, a disability sensitisation workshop in association with Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). Students and experts from TISS sensitised people about the difficulties that people with physical challenges face. The motive of the workshop was to dispel myths about visual, hearing, physical and speech impairment.

On the occasion, professor Shrilatha Juwas, Centre for disability Studies and Action, TISS said, “Lack of facilities of these children in educational institutes, often discourages them from discontinuing their education. It doesn’t take much effort to help differently-disable children. Hospitals, schools and railways needs to be more responsible in providing better life.”

“We need to come up with solutions to address the problems and sensitizing people can make it easier,” she added.

Participants were blindfolded and made to take a round around the lobby, familiarised to say their name in sign language, write with their non-dominant hand and climb stairs using crutches. Students of social work from TISS were seen collaborating with families and individuals present at Jaslok, who face disability in their daily life.
