In yet another attack on civic officials, a junior engineer of G-South ward office was allegedly assaulted by a Shiv Sena leader at Dadar on Tuesday.

In yet another attack on civic officials, a junior engineer of G-South ward office was allegedly assaulted by a Shiv Sena leader at Dadar on Tuesday. An FIR has been filed at Dadar police station in this matter for obstructing public servants from doing their duty.

According to civic officials, G-South ward officials, acting against encroachments, illegal hawkers and banners, were implementing a drive against encroachments and illegal hawkers at Sayani Road. However, Sena shakhapramukh Shailesh Mali opposed the drive. He also had altercation with junior engineer Hemant Chandane, who was heading the drive. Despite the opposition, as the BMC squad continued its drive, Mr Mali tried to stop municipal vehicles by lying down in front them. He also allegedly assaulted Mr Chandane in the process. The incident led to a lot of tension in the area, said officials.

Meanwhile, the Sena organised an agitation before the G-South ward to protest against the BMC. “The civic body’s actions smacks of vendetta against small traders. Even the stalls of women’s self-help groups were not spared. It is an attempt to deprive hawkers of their bread and butter,” said Sena corporator Kishori Pednekar.

Sainath Rajadhyaksha, general secretary of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Engineers Union, condemned the attack. “This is not the first time that civic officials have been targeted during drives. We have been demanding that they should be given protection during these drives. We also want attacks on civic officials to be made a non-bailable offence. When Swadheen Kshatriya was the municipal commissioner, he had sent a letter to the state government in this regard. Now he is state chief secretary; we will pursue this matter with him,” he said.
