IPS officer Satish Mathur took charge as the new director general of Maharashtra Police on Sunday. His predecessor Pravin Dixit handed over the charge to him following his retirement from services on Sunday.

A 1981 batch officer, Mr Mathur, before taking over as DGP, was the additional DGP of the anti-corruption bureau (ACB), a post he held only for four months from April to July.

Sunday also saw the retirement of Mr Dixit and senior police officers gathered at the Naigaon police grounds to bid farewell. All the IPS officers that had gathered at the Naigaon police ground lauded the working style and the level of access Mr Dixit provided to his subordinates while occupying the highest post.

Post the ceremony, Mr Dixit, while addressing his fellow officers, said the police force needs to open up to using technology. “The force needs to use maximum technology and make full use of all the technological advancements in investigations and also in day-to-day activities,” he said.

Talking about his experience in the force, Mr Dixit said he had learnt a lot from his fellow officers and his subordinates. He also asked police personnel to devise ways to increase citizen volunteering. “More people and citizens should be roped in area-wise policing activities. This will help the policemen and also increase awareness among the people,” he said.

After the ceremony, Mr Dixit headed back to the office of the Maharashtra state police to hand over charge to Mr Mathur, who declined to meet the media after taking charge. Mr Mathur, who has also been the commissioner of police for Pune, has to his credit an increased conviction rate when he was the first director general of police (legal and technical).

The farewell ceremony ended with the age-old ritual of IPS officers pulling the decorated open jeep, by two long ropes, occupied by the outgoing director general, till the exit.
