Heavy showers early on Thursday morning threatened to throw life out of gear in the city. Later in the day, however, the rain relented, bringing much-needed relief to Mumbaikars, who have been reeling under an incessant wet spell over the past few days.
When the rains continued to lash Mumbai in the early hours of Thursday, it looked like the city would witness another day of monsoon-related woes. In a brief three-hour period, from 5 am to 8 am, it poured so heavily that several parts of the city were flooded, throwing traffic movement in disarray. But the situation improved as the rains started receding in the afternoon. By evening, it had almost stopped, allowing Mumbaikars to step out freely.
The heavy rainfall in the morning resulted in water-logging at several places. The civic body received complaints of flooding from Hindmata, Sion, Maheshwari Udyan, Motishah Lane, Mukhyadhyakap Bhavan and the Matunga railway station area in the island city; from Shastri Nagar, Santracruz (east), Bandra (east) and the Juhu bus stand area in the western suburbs; and from the Premiere Company area, Kurla (west), Jijamata Nagar, Chembur, Mahul and RCF Road in the eastern suburbs.
According to the BMC’s automatic weather stations, the island city recorded 84.07 mm of rainfall, while the eastern and western suburbs recorded 76.27 mm and 95.89 mm.
