The city’s first and only metro corridor so far, which runs through Versova and Andheri to Ghatkopar and is known as the Metro-1 corridor, has made it to the textbooks of state board schools, giving students a chance to know about the infrastructure project.

A chapter, titled ‘Safar Metro Chi’, has been included in the class 6 Marathi Balbharti textbooks. The chapter has references to features that a commuter travelling via the Metro can experience.

It also has references to features in the Metro stations, such as escalators, air-conditioned coaches and token-operated security gates. The three-page chapter also has excerpts of a brief interview with a Metro train pilot, Raupali Chavan, wherein she has answered queries on the technicalities of a Metro corridor and on issues such as the qualification required for becoming a Metro pilot and challenges faced while on duty.

The syllabus for class 6 has been upgraded on the basis of the National Curriculum Framework (2005) that seeks to bring all state boards at par with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

“It is a good move in a larger context, because a student residing in a rural area also will now know what a Metro corridor is,” said Prashant

Redij, spokesperson, Maharashtra State Principal Association.
