Marital discord ends in suicide

A 22-year-old youth committed suicide early on Sunday in Charkop in Kandivali (west) because he was unable to mend ties with his estranged wife.

The man, who was depressed, took the extreme step by jumping off the 19th floor of his residential building under the influence of alcohol. He was an undergraduate and unemployed.

According to the Charkop police, the incident took place at around 6 am in Mhada building number 55 in Ekta Nagar area of Charkop.

The deceased, identified as Anmol Sanjay Chandan, used to live with his wife in their rented accommodation. The couple had tied the knot last year in September in an arranged marriage.

A couple of months after that his wife approached the Charkop police station with a written complaint alleging that he assaulted her under the influence of alcohol and suspected her of cheating on him.

Although she left him after giving the written complaint she never approached the police again and hence action was not initiated against Chandan. On Friday, he got drunk again and asked his wife for a divorce. Enraged, she stopped all communications with him.

He then tried approaching her home and office and also called her several times and sent her WhatsApp messages trying to reconcile. He also tried to communicate with her before committing suicide.

An accidental death case has been recorded and the police said there was no abetment to suicide and his wife cannot be blamed for his action.

The police has seized his cellphone. They have recorded the statements of his wife. The body has been sent to Rajawadi Hospital for an autopsy.
