The Bombay high court has asked all the petitioners who are opposed to 16 per cent reservation of Marathas in jobs and education to submit their arguments in written formats.

The Bombay high court has asked all the petitioners who are opposed to 16 per cent reservation of Marathas in jobs and education to submit their arguments in written formats. Once this is received, the court will decide when the matter will be heard finally. The court has kept the matter for next hearing on October 13.

A division bench of Justice Anoop Mohata and Justice Girish Kulkarni was hearing a bunch of PILs filed against the state government decision to give 16 per cent reservation to Marathas community in government jobs and educational institutions. The court will also hear a bunch of applications in favour of the reservation.

One of the petitioner, Ketan Tirodkar in his petition said the Maratha community was not socially and educationally backward and the government’s decision to give 16 per cent reservation is a fraud committed upon the country and its constitution.

In November 2014, the high court had stayed the implementation of the controversial decision of the then Congress-NCP government.

The court had while staying the 16 per cent Maratha reservation held that the Supreme Court had already laid down the law for reservation, stating it could not exceed 50 per cent of the total seats.

The litigants had then approached the apex court but were sent back to the high court and asked to wait for the final hearing.
