Students taking admission in FYJC this year may have to forego some holidays during the festive season like Diwali and Christmas due to the delay in the start of the academic year. Despite efforts by the state to get the academic year started sooner this year, various online admissions related problems has seen junior colleges starting only last week. Meanwhile, the deputy director of education’s (DYDE) office that is conducting the FYJC online admission has started counselling at its help centres as well as the main office to help hundreds of students who are yet to get admission in the junior college of their choice.

Though all students with the exception of two who had applied for the online admission process were allotted seats in four rounds of admission, the DYDE saw disgruntled students and parents making a beeline for the office demanding allocation of seats in the college of their choice. As a result, the office at Charni Road became overcrowded and led to obstruction of traffic throughout the day. With mounting pressure from the traffic police and irate motorists, the DYDE decided to divert the complaints to help centres that were set up to assist applicants for the online admission.

“Students and parents come from all over the city and this leads to a lot of problems. Hence, they are now being directed to the help centres where officials have been directed to counsel and convince students to take admission in the allotted colleges,” said B.B. Chavan, deputy director.

He added that the DYDE was adhering to the instructions of the high court that had asked all admissions including the quota admissions to be done through the online mode and hence no student could be allotted seats apart from what was assigned to them through the online mode.

When asked about the delay in junior colleges starting late despite efforts to expedite it by declaring SSC results earlier, an official said, “Most of the colleges started last week and some will start this week. However, in case of the college not being able to complete the stipulated academic days they will have to cut down on the holidays during the festive seasons,” said the official.

However, the ministry would take a decision on the matter after the colleges submit their academic days’ record.
