A fire broke out at the Western Railway’s (WR), electrical multiple unit (EMU) workshop at Mahalaxmi after sparks from undergoing welding works fell on dry garbage that was lying nearby. However, neither was anyone injured in the incident nor did it disrupt services.

The welding was being done on a local train that had gone in for its periodic overhaul (POH). WR public relations office Gajanan Mahatpurkar said that only one coach was damaged and the fire brigade was not required as the fire was extinguished by the railway workers. “The fire was reported at 11 am and since we have fire fighting equipment in the workshop, the railway officials had extinguished the fire by noon, before the fire fighting engines reached the spot. No one was injured and there was no disruption in the services,” he said.

Similar incidents of stray fires have been occurring in the railways this month with one such incident having occurred at Titwala on January 16 where a parked local train caught fire. It was brought to attention by the loco-pilot of the Nandigram Express. An official on the condition of anonymity said that authorities need to ensure that such occurrences reduce as the damage to the property does pinch their pocket. “The Titwala fire damaged one entire train now the Mahalaxmi fire has damaged a coach. We must remember that we cannot afford too many of these incidences,” said the official.
