The Indian coast guard (ICG) on Tuesday rescued a 24-year-old Indian deck cadet on board the bulk carrier MV Silver Star, near Revdanda about 45 km south of Mumbai. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre of Mumbai had received an alert about a deck cadet who had suffered injuries on board on late Monday evening and following it, the coast guard was rushed to help him out. The cadet was rescued around 11 am on Tuesday.

According to the officials from coast guard, MRCC received a telephonic message late evening Monday late evening from a vessel of Panama flag requesting for the evacuation of an Indian cadet, Patrick Kennedy, who had suffered serious injury on his right hand by hammer, whilst working on the deck. The cadet was in pain and had been advised evacuation by the company medical officer.

Following the alert, ICG intervened and coordinated with the agencies to facilitate the approvals for disembarkation of the casualty. Later, the coast guard station Murud Janjira was directed to initiate necessary coordination with the local authorities to initiate the evacuation. After which ICG personnel’s reached the vessel, and evacuated the cadet from a cargo net. Later Mr Patrick was admitted to Nair Hospital for treatment, informed the officials.

Commenting on the operation, an ICG official explained that in usual circumstances, seamen can neither disembark on the shore nor can they join the ship at the anchorage as they need to take prior permission from immigration department. But as the patient was in pain, the authority decided to relieve him.
