A group of burglars broke into a jewellery shop in Naigaon, a distant suburb of the city, and made away with valuables worth Rs 40 lakh in broad daylight on Monday. Police sources said the entire act was captured on a CCTV camera and the police was trying to establish the identity of the intruders.

Officials said the gang of burglars had entered the shop form a nearby construction site and made away with a kilogram of gold and 16 kg of silver worth Rs 40 lakh.

Construction work is ongoing at the Mhatre Niwas building in the Wakipada area of Naigaon. The jewellery shop, which belongs to one Bhairav Singh Rajput, was started in the same building just 10 days ago. On Monday, the owner and employees had shut shop and dispersed for lunch. However, when they returned by 2 pm, they found the shop had been ransacked.

A police official said the CCTV footage showed two people had barged into the shop by breaking its sidewall. They had covered their faces with a handkerchief, while one stood outside to raise alarm in case of danger.

Officials said the burglars had knowledge of gold, as the shop also had a number of imitation jewellery on display, which had been left untouched.
