The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to spend Rs 1.62 crore for adding 21 Mahindra Scorpio cars for use by its officials.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to spend Rs 1.62 crore for adding 21 Mahindra Scorpio cars for use by its officials.

Not too long ago, the BMC had purchased new cars for the mayor and standing committee chairman. The civic body will now be buying vehicles for its deputy commissioners and assistant commissioners of ward offices.

According to the civic officials, due to frequent problems with current vehicles, the BMC has decided to purchase new cars for its officials. The civic body has given deputy commissioner and all assistant commissioners white-colored Mahindra Scorpios, and has also given cars to various departmental heads.

“The old set of cars has been used beyond their lifespan and they have been frequently creating problems by breaking down. An exorbitant amount of money is being spent for the repair work of these old cars, and temporary repairs are not making situation any better. Hence, BMC has decided to purchase 21 brand new Scorpios,” said a senior civic official.

The BMC has decided to purchase new set of Scorpio cars directly from Mahindra&Mahindra company without inviting tenders. Almost Rs 7.79 lakh will be paid for each Scorpio with registration, insurance and other necessary paper work.

The BMC, however, has not specified whether all the old vehicles have run more than 10 years’ of life, expected as per norms.
