Ambedkar Bhavan press can be restored: Report

The court-appointed architect, who was given the task to ascertain the extent of the damage caused to Ambedkar Bhavan in Dadar, submitted his report to the Bombay high court on Monday. The report suggests that there is a possibility of restoring the structure. The HC had appointed architect Shashi Prabhu to inspect Ambedkar Bhavan and file a report by August 5.

As per the court’s directions, Mr Prabhu conducted a survey of the demolished structure on August 2 and 3. The court had granted permission for three members of People’s Improvement Trust (PIT), which runs Ambedkar Bhavan, and seven members of Dr B.R. Ambedkar’s family to remain present with Mr Prabhu at the time of the survey. During the inspection, videos and photographs of the place were also taken.

On Monday, Mr Prabhu submitted his report before Justice Shahrukh.J. Kathawala, who perused the report and, on the request of the parties concerned, issued direction that a copy of the report be provided to all the parties concerned.

The judge adjourned the matter till August 18 and restrained all the parties from entering the premises of Ambedkar Bhavan until then.

According to the report, Buddha Bhushan Printing Press, run by Prakash Ambedkar, the grandson of Dr Ambedkar, and the offices that were situated in Ambedkar Bhavan could be restored.

The HC was hearing an application filed by PIT against the proposed rebuilding of the demolished structure through voluntary contributions. The application had been filed as Prakash Ambedkar had called for the followers of the late Dalit leader to assemble at the premises on July 30 and rebuild and restore the structure.
