The Kamothe police has registered a case against the mess owner of a hostel after 36 nursing students of MGM Hospital who were living there were taken ill owing to food poisoning Sunday night.

The Kamothe police has registered a case against the mess owner of a hostel after 36 nursing students of MGM Hospital who were living there were taken ill owing to food poisoning Sunday night. Seventy were discharged, while the remaining girls are recovering from the illness, doctors said.

“Clearly the mess owner and the workers who provide food to the hostel were negligent. Also, the hostel authority should have checked the food first before giving it to the patient or any worker of the hospital. Most of the doctors were complaining about the unhealthy food being provided by the mess but no action was taken,” a senior police inspector of the Kamothe police station said

In the night, some complained of stomachache and vomiting after having dinner at the hostel mess.

“The incident occurred on Sunday night after the students had their dinner at the hostel mess. We have registered a case against some hostel workers and the mess owner and their cooks. Food samples and blood samples of the girls have been sent to forensic laboratory and soon we will come to know what is the reason behind it. We have taken statements of the girls and the mess workers, cooks and owners. We have scrutinised the kitchen of the mess and taken details of the same,” she said. Parents of the students are upset as the MGM Hospital authority didn’t support the girls.
