Navy and ship model enthusiasts are in for a treat as models of the Indian Navy’s first indigenous Godavari-class warships, among other vessels and submarines, are being displayed at an exhibition in Mulund.

The Navy has contributed 12 models for the exhibition while Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) has supplied five. Also, college students have prepared a few models of their own, in an endeavour to enlighten the public about the Indian Navy’s technological prowess.

The naval exhibition named ‘India’s Naval Prowess’ is being organised by Mulund-based organisation ‘Salute India’ along with five colleges across the state and the Western Naval Command of the Indian Navy and MDL, which have set up stalls where models of warships and submarines that are between two and 12 feet in length are displayed.

Rear admiral Satish Gormade, flag officer of Western Naval Command, on Friday afternoon inaugurated the Mulund exhibition and it will remain open till Sunday afternoon. The Maritime History Society is also taking part in the exhibition and it has set up huge banners detailing the purchase and commissioning process of warships.

Satish Patankar, coordinator for this event, while talking to The Asian Age, said, this 80-year-old organisation felicitates retired armed forces personnel every year, which was where the idea germinated. It occurred to the organisers that an exhibition must be held to showcase the Navy’s strength to the public. “People should have direct knowledge of Naval forces. This is our aim,” said Mr Patankar.

Salute India also provides scholarships to needy children and organises medical camps.

Visitors can check out the exhibition at Maharashtra Seva Sangh Hall above Apna Bazar, Nehru Road, Mulund (west).
