The Supreme Court has stayed the selection process for the appointment of assistant professors in the commerce department of Benares Hindu University (BHU).

The Supreme Court has stayed the selection process for the appointment of assistant professors in the commerce department of Benares Hindu University (BHU).

A bench of Justices J. Chelameswar and A.M. Sapre passed this interim order while admitting two appeals filed by Dharmendra Kumar challenging a judgment of the Allahabad high court refusing to grant relief to the petitioner. The bench directed BHU to maintain status quo, which will mean that no fresh advertisements can be issued for the same post.

The petitioner said he was ranked first in the selection process for appointment of assistant professors in the general category for five posts, and he was placed in waiting list 1. However, he was not appointed for the post even though the vacancy was not filled up. A fresh advertisement was issued rejecting his claim to the vacant post though he is placed number one in the waiting list and thus eligible for the post. The petitioner contended that the selection process was mala fide.
