AICC general secretary Kamal Nath, who has recently been made in-charge of the party affairs in Haryana, is needed more in Madhya Pradesh than in Haryana to revive the party which has been out of power for over 12 consecutive years, thus making MP a strong BJP state after Gujarat.

The saffron party might have won three Assembly elections in Chhattisgarh continuously owing to the infighting in Congress but the story of Madhya Pradesh is different, view Congress insiders. Accor-ding to them, Mr Nath, the senior-most member in the current Lok Sabha who has won nine Lok Sabha elections from Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh, could be useful there if he got a role.

There is sufficient time to revive the party since Madhya Pradesh could go to the polls in 2017. Congress has only three Lok Sabha members from Madhya Pradesh, which was once its stronghold.

Though Congress has many leaders in the state, including those who have charisma and experience in running governments and the organisation, this has not been translating into victory. According to Congress sources, AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Satyavrat Chatur-vedi, Arun Yadav and Ajay Singh are some of the leaders with the potential who, if they decide, can deliver.

For Mr Nath, Haryana is a small state in the sense that he would have no work till 2019 Lok Sabha polls and the state Assembly polls could be held in 2020.

His talent, experience, managerial skill is needed in Madhya Pradesh to ensure Congress’ victory, they felt.

In Chhattisgarh, the rebel leader Ajit Jogi might have sabotaged Congress in the elections but there is no surprise in the state regarding who has been ensuring BJP’s victory in Madhya Pradesh in the last three elections, they said.
