Angry relatives of a dead heart patient went on the rampage at Murshidabad Medical College Hospital in Behampore on Monday morning, beating up an on duty doctor and breaking furniture. And this orgy of violence and vandalism took place in presence of the police which remained helpless spectator. A housewife, Minati Ghosh, from Radharghat area was brought to the hospital after she suffered a massive heart attack. At the emergency ward, Dr S.K. Ghosh declared her dead after inspection but her relatives claimed that she was still alive when they allegedly saw movements in her fingers. The agitated family members forced the authorities to admit Minati in the female ward. However after several check ups, a panel of doctors once again declared her dead.

This enraged her relatives who ran amok, dragging Dr Ghosh and assaulting him, damaging the computers and important medical equipment. Elder brother of the deceased patient Mahadev Ghosh claimed his sister could have been saved if Dr. Ghosh had not neglected her and started her treatment in time. He alleged that the doctor was a drug addict. Dr Ghosh insisted that the patient was already dead. He explained that there might have been some movement in the limbs when rigor mortis was setting but the family mistook it for sign of life.

Medical superintendent and vice principal (MSVP) of the hospital Dr. Monimoy Banerjee said he had ordered an inquiry to establish if the patient died due any negligence.
