Two Islamic militants and two Army jawans have been killed in a firefight raging in Nowgam sector along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district since Friday night.

Two Islamic militants and two Army jawans have been killed in a firefight raging in Nowgam sector along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district since Friday night.

While the identity of the slain militants is being ascertained, the Army jawans who laid down their lives during the encounter are Sepoy Babaloo Singh, 29, from Jandipur in Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh and Sepoy Vishal Chaudhary, 30, a resident of Ronda, Anoop Shahr of Bulandshahar district (also in UP). Both were serving in the Army for the last 11 years, defence sources here said.

The sources said that the Army’s alert jawans defending the LoC noticed the movement of an infiltrating group of militants late Friday night. “Two of the terrorists who had sneaked into the Nowgam sector after breaching the fence were killed in the fire fight which ensured after our jawans established contact with them early Saturday,” the sources said. The operation was going on as reports last came in, the sources added.

A defence spokesman added that after noticing suspicious movement along the LoC in Nowgam sector during the intervening night, the troops challenged the infiltrators who opened fire which was quickly returned and a firefight started. Two soldiers were killed and another was injured, he said adding that two AK rifles, one UBGL and other “war-like stores” were found on the slain militants.

The spokesman further said that this was the second major infiltration bid foiled by the Army in this sector this week. Four militants were killed and one Bahadur Ali, a Pakistani national, was captured alive in a failed infiltration bid on July 26.
