A 26-year-old Delhi University M.Phil. student, who is partially blind, was robbed and beaten up by three mobile snatchers in northwest Delhi’s Mukherjee Nagar on Friday evening.

The victim managed to catch hold one of the robbers on a motorcycle and he was handed over to the police with the help of public.

The student, Shaqir Hussain, who lives in Mansarovar Hostel on the North campus, was going to withdraw cash for an ATM booth behind G.T.B. Nagar Metro station. Three men on a motorcycle overpowered him from behind. One of them snatched his mobile phone and others forced him to hand over other valuables.

“I was walking on the street, when the three persons snatched my mobile phone. I chased them and caught one of them due to which all fell on the ground. I kept holding him, but the other two fled,” Mr Hussain said.

He also said he kept shouting, but nobody came forward to help him. “I was struggling to keep hold of him.

He kept beating me on my face and private parts so that he could run,” added Mr Hussain, who is a native of Haryana’s Mewat district and is pursuing M.Phil. in history from DU.

Mr Hussain suffers from cataract from his birth and just has 20 per cent vision in his eyes.

“People who gathered at the spot first thought that I am a criminal because he was beating me. No body even called up the police. When they started questioning me, I set him free,” said Mr Hussain, adding that he followed the robber for a few metres, again shouting “Chor Chor,” and another group of people caught him.

“Then, I told people about the incident and one of them called up the police, which came at least half-an-hour after the incident,” said Mr Hussain.
