Reviewing the law and order situation in the national capital, lieutenant-governor Najeeb Jung on Thursday stressed on the safety of women and people from the Northeast and warned that police officers will be held responsible for any laxity in discharge of duty.

Mr Jung held a high-level meeting with police commissioner Alok Kumar, special commissioners (law and order), joint commissioners (all ranges), all DCPs and issued instructions for strict action and compliance with t hose. He directed the DCPs to ensu-re that the conduct of SHOs and their subordinate staff is of highest standards, especially while dealing with common people.

Police personnel must demonstrate sensitivity to people and their issues, Mr Jung said.

Directing officers to ado-pt zero tolerance to crimes against women, he said the number of such incidents must be brought down with concerted efforts.

He also directed the police to intensify patrolling, particularly in areas which are more prone to crimes against women. Also SHOs must actively engage with local NGOs working with women in their areas.

On safety of people from northeastern states in the national capital, the L-G cautioned officers to be careful of any targeted crime against them, particularly women. Individual responsibility of officers, including SHOs of the area, will be fixed if there are crimes against people from the Northeast residing in Delhi, he said.

“There can be no substitute for honesty and hard work. Please remember the two most sacred books for you are the Constitution of India and the CrPC,” Mr Jung told the top police brass. On communal harmony, he said police must isolate elements trying to disrupt peace and communal harmony and deal with them strictly. SHOs should intensify their engagement with peace committees and regularly engage with people in their areas.
