In an alleged hit-and-run case, a Delhi police ACP chased down a car that hit two bikers near the BRT corridor.

In an alleged hit-and-run case, a Delhi police ACP chased down a car that hit two bikers near the BRT corridor. The ACP chased the car for nearly three kilometres and arrested the accused driver who has had previous involvements in a rape case and negligent driving, the police said on Thursday.

ACP Amit Kaushik of Ambedkar Nagar was on night patrolling duty and while crossing the BRT corridor, he saw a white Swift hit a motorcycle and run away at around 4.20 am on Thursday.

Mr Kaushik, in his police Gypsy, accompanied by his driver and operator, started following the car that went towards Chirag Delhi, then turned towards Outer Ring Road and instead of taking the Nehru Place flyover, took Lala Lajpat Rai Marg and tried to speed away. The ACP managed to intercept the driver after a 3-km-long chase at Kailash Colony Metro Station, said a senior police official.

“The car had four occupants, the accused driver Satish Bhardwaj (34), two of his relatives, a friend identified as Rajkumar, Manish, and Vinod. Satish was driving under the influence of alcohol and his vehicle was over-speeding. He knew that he was being chased by a police vehicle but continued riding his vehicle,” said the official.

A case under Sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of IPC and 185 (driving by a drunken person or by a person under the influence of drugs) under the Motor vehicles Act has been registered against Satish who was arrested.

Satish is a resident of Neb Sarai and has been previously involved in a rape case in which he was also charged for selling a minor for prostitution, said the official.

The two injured persons, identified as Sawan (28) and Sanjeev Lamba (29), sustained minor injuries on their hands and face, said the police.

In another incident, two juveniles, who used to steal two-wheelers for joy rides and later park them in narrow lanes of the city, have been apprehended and six vehicles have been recovered on their instance, the police said on Thursday.

They were apprehended while riding a stolen scooter at a barricade near Ganda Nala of I- Block in Karampura on October 11, said DCP (West) Vijay Kumar. “During questioning, they revealed that they had stolen vehicles for joy rides. After which, they used to park them in narrow lanes,” said the officer.
