A 15-year-old boy, son of a serving colonel of the Indian Army, was allegedly thrashed brutally by the Delhi police personnel near Dhaula Kuan in southwest Delhi on Tuesday, during a VIP movement protocol for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cavalcade.

Taking cognisance of the incident, senior police officials have sent a constable to police lines and assured action against an inspector.

Kislay Mudgal, a student of Class 11, was badly beaten up by a cop when he unwittingly entered a road that had been cordoned off for the Prime Minister’s cavalcade on the way from the airport to 7 Race Course Road.

The boy, who lives with his family in Dwarka Sector 21, had gone to Dhaula Kuan to play basketball at around 5 pm. He was waiting for a pickup van to reach his coaching centre, when two policemen allegedly confronted him, asking him to move away. “He was waiting for the vehicle when the two cops bullied him and when he reacted to it saying that cannot treat him like that, they pushed him and then started slapping him repeatedly on his face and back. They also dragged him inside the Dhaula Kuan police Chowki and beat him up. As he was hit by the cops, his dental braces came out with blood in his mouth and his spectacles and mobile phone were also damaged,” alleged Viplav Thakur, the boy’s uncle.

“A young woman, who tried to intervene by admonishing the policemen for treating the boy brutally, had to face their misbehaviour. The woman later called Col. Kunal Mudgal and gave all the details to him,” he said. The boy’s father along with his colleagues and relatives went to the police outpost to lodge a complaint.

A senior Delhi traffic police officer confirmed that the incident had occurred around the time the Prime Minister’s cavalcade was to pass by. The incident was also captured on CCTV footage.

The boy’s family members said that senior police officers acknowledged the mistake made by their subordinates.
