Intensifying its attack on Delhi University Students’ Union (Dusu) president Satender Awana, left-wing student organisation AISA demanded he resign from his post.

Mr Awana, an ABVP member, who is facing molestation and dowry harassment charges, denied the allegation and said that if found guilty he would step down from his post.

AISA national president Sucheta De said, “A person who has been booked under serious charges of gender violence holds no responsibility and power, specially in such a reputed educational institution. Not only us but the other students also demand that Mr Awana should step down from his post of DUSU president. We all are aware that thugs like him are encouraged and given importance by the ruling powers of big political parties. He must not be exempted from any kind of punishment and must be charged according to the law of the land.”

A Delhi University student argued, “The DUSU president is allegedly known for his hooliganism, hate speeches and gendered intimidation. Earlier in January, he was caught on camera hurling abuse at two female journalists of a news portal for covering a story on gender awareness while asking questions of university students and claimed himself to be the sole authority over DU’s freedom of speech.”

More recently, Mr Awana, addressing ABVP workers at Jantar Mantar, said he would enter JNU and shoot anti-nationals present inside the campus.

The 23-year-old DUSU president, while denying all allegations, argued, “The girl is calling me her elder brother-in-law. But I am 23 and her husband is 28, so how can I be her elder brother-in-law I was not even a part of their marriage. Mohit, her husband, is not even my relative. We just belong to the same village and I had gone to his residence to solve a domestic dispute. Just having Awana as a surname does not mean I am his relative. The whole case is taking the shape of a political conspiracy just to malign my image.”

Mr Awana also targeted the student organisations asking for his resignation.
