The Supreme Court on Monday issued contempt of court notice to businessman Vijay Mallya, who is in exile in the UK for not making full disclosure of his assets in India and abroad, including $45 million received from a British firm.

A Bench of Justices Kurian Joseph and Rohinton Nariman sought Mallya’s reply in four weeks after Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the consortium of banks submitted that Mallya had not given full details of the assets as per the directions issued in April. In particular the AG said Mallya had suppressed information about receipt of $45 million from Diageo company and thus had committed contempt of court.

In its application the banks said the disclosure of assets by Vijay Mallaya as ordered by this court is vague; he had not disclosed his full assets, including foreign and cash assets of Rs 2,500 crores.
