Assam has approached the union government for support for setting up skill development centres across the state to increase employability of the state's youth, a minister said Monday.

State Industry and Power minister Pradyut Bordoloi said a proposal has been sent by the state government to Union Minister of State for Sports and Youth Affairs and Skill Development Sarbananda Sonowal in this regard.

"The industry department of Assam had conducted a survey last year on the youth of the state and found that about eight lakh youth are working outside the state. Of these, three lakh are working in security agencies," Bordoloi said.

"If we can upgrade the skills of these youth, it would enhance their chances of employability. We want to set up some multi-disciplinary skill development centres in each development block of the state to help these youths," he said.

He said the training centres would help people looking for jobs acquire skills in different sectors like IT, hospitality business, etc.
