"Rarely do former intel chiefs and I agree," Edward Snowden began a tweet, wading, once again, into the huge Aadhaar debate.

Snowden, involved in exposing a massive surveillance operation run by an American intelligence agency, said this while sharing an article on Aadhaar authored by a former head of India's external intelligence agency, the Research and Analysis Wing.
KC Verma, whose piece Snowden retweeted, wrote about "the stupidities, fallacies, misconceptions, whims and fancies regarding Aadhaar".

Sharing the article, Snowden, who is wanted in the United States of America for leaking classified information said, "Rarely do former intel chiefs and I agree, but the head of India's RAW writes Aadhaar is being abused by banks, telcos, and transport not to police entitlements, but as a proxy for identity-an improper gate to service."

"Such demands must be criminalized," Snowden added, before going on to rebut the Unique Identification Authority of India, which runs the Aadhaar programme, directly.

This is not the first time Snowden has spoken on Aadhaar. Just a fortnight ago, Snowden, an ardent privacy advocate, tweeted in support of an Indian journalist who reported that access to Aadhaar data was available for sale.
