Navjot Singh Sidhu, the Punjab tourism miniser and yesteryear cricketer made a sudden appearance at the Finance Ministry in North Block yesterday to meet finance minister Arun Jaitley.

Sidhu entered Jaitley's office and touched his feet, a gesture, which Jaitley reciprocated with a pat on the back.

What transpired nobody knows, but we wouldn't be far off the mark if we said that the two ministers sorted out and settled a simmering animosity that goes back decades.

But the Congress party is concerned about the meeting because Sidhu has changed parties often and has played a spoiler during many elections.

After Sidhu defeated Jaitley in Amritsar during the 2014 general elections, Captain Amarinder Singh asked had Rahul Gandhi not to admit him in the Congress.

Singh, who is now the Punjab chief minister told Rahul that Sidhu was a joker and could not be taken seriously.  On this meeting with Jaitley, the captain is believed to have said that Rahul Gandhi needs jokers like this in the Congress only if he wants to bring the party down.

Sidhu had resigned from the BJP in 2016 , as a member of the Rajya Sabha. He was upset by the party's decision to fight the next elections in an alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal.
