After the deadly attack near Parliament in Westminster, London, Assistant deputy commissioner Mark Rowley has named the police officer who died as Keith Palmer, a 48-year-old husband and father.

Palmer had worked for the Metropolitan Police for 15 years, having previously served in the armed forces.

"He was someone who left for work today expecting to return home at the end of his shift - and he had every right to expect that would happen," Scotland Yard's most senior anti-terror officer Mark Rowley said.

Chairman of the Metropolitan Police Federation Ken Marsh expressed "deepest sympathy" to the officer's family.

He added: "This incident sadly shows the dangers our colleagues face on a daily basis. They show incredible bravery protecting the public."

The last death of a Met Police officer on duty was in September 2013 when 47-year-old Pc Andrew Duncan was killed as he attempted to stop a speeding vehicle in Sutton, south London.
