Meira Kumar files nomination papers in Sonia's presence

Just in: Opposition presidential nominee Meira Kumar files her nomination papers for the post of the President of India.

Meira Kumar is filing her nomination at the Parliament House. The Opposition parties had declared Meira Kumar as their candidate for the Presidential post, days after the NDA declared Ram Nath Kovind as their choice.

Present in the Parliament House are Sharad Pawar, Sonia Gandhi, Kamal Nath, Sitaram Yechury, Digvijaya Singh, D Raja, Mallikarjuna Kharge, Ashok Chavan, Dr Manmohan Singh, M Siddaramaiah among senior leaders.

This will be the second occasion when a Dalit will occupy the highest constitutional office. The first was K R Narayanan, who was in the Rashtrapati Bhavan in 1997-2002. 

Meira Kumar has filed four sets of nomination papers, as did Ram Nath Kovind, before the Lok Sabha Secretary General, Anoop Mishra.
