February 22, 2017  20:32
As Rajeev Sharma told us last week, Gopal Baglay will be the ministry of external affairs' new spokesperson.

Baglay, Rajeev tells us, will take over on Friday, February 24. He replaces Vikas Swarup, who leaves for Ottawa on Tuesday, February 28, to take over as India's high commissioner in Canada by Thursday, March 2.

The MEA has not yet issued a formal announcement appointing Baglay as its new spokesperson and joint secretary (external publicity).

This is because Foreign Secretary Dr S Jaishankar is currently on the second leg of his three-nation tour of Sri Lanka, China and Bangladesh.

Dr Jaishankar returns home on Friday and is expected to issue Baglay s appointment order the same day.

Baglay himself is currently in China to attend an Afghanistan-specific meeting.

Currently, the joint secretary (PAI or Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran) at the MEA headquarters in New Delhi, Baglay returns home on Thursday, February 23.

The MEA will host a meal at a five star hotel on Saturday, February 25, to bid Swarup farewell and welcome the new spokesperson
