Havildar Hangpan Dada of the Assam Regiment has been awarded the Ashok Chakra for fighting militants at Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir.

Earlier in May 2016, the 36-year-old valiant soldier laid down his life during an encounter with 4 terrorists trying to infiltrate the Line of Control in the Nowgam area of Kashmir.

When 'Dada', as he was fondly called, spotted them, he waited patiently for them to enter his kill zone and then killed two of them with initial burst of shooting.

During the ensuing gun battle, a bullet got Dada in the neck, but he managed to injure the last terrorist. Dada's teammates closed in and finished the job. Even in death, apparently, Dada's hand didn't let go its grip on his AK-47 rifle.

The Ashoka Chakra is India's highest peacetime military decoration awarded for valour, courageous action or self-sacrifice away from the battlefield.
