Sumitra Mahajan likely to be Modi's choice for President

With President Pranab Mukherjee's tenure entering the last lap -- he will step down in 2017 -- speculation over his likely successor has begun.

Ask the top BJP leadership about their likely candidate for the top office in the country and pat comes the answer: Watch the next Union Cabinet reshuffle which will open up the various possibilities before Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Another straw in the wind will be BJP chief Amit Shah's new team of office-bearers.

Party insiders feel both these exercises will reveal the Modi-Shah duo's mind as well narrow down their choice for next President.

But it would be safe to state that Pranabda's successor is likely to be a woman. And the BJP will go in for a consensus candidate.

With one year to go, the hot money right now, it seems, is on Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan.
