Harayna is the latest to join the meat ban-wagon. The state orders slaughter houses to be closed till September 19 citing the Jain festival, Paryushan. It is the fifth BJP-ruled state to do so.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation yesterday told the Bombay high court that it has decided to withdraw its decision to ban the slaughter and sale of meat in Mumbai. The BMC informed the court of its decision during the hearing of a petition filed by meat-sellers challenging the four-day ban on meat sales, which included a two-day ban by the state government.

Chattisgarh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Jammu and Kashmir are the other states to impose the ban. A directive to ban the sale of meat was issued in Ahmedabad earlier this week.
