At least 10 Hindu pilgrims have been killed in a stampede during a bathing ritual at a holy site in Narayanganj, Bangladesh, say local media.

The incident happened during the Astami Snan, one of the largest annual Hindu ceremonies in Bangladesh, when pilgrims bathe in the Brahmaputra river, reports the BBC.

Thousands of people were attending the event in Langalband, 20km south of the capital, Dhaka.

Seven of the victims were women and all were older than 50.
