Govt willing to drive GST with Cong amendments, but Rahul is the bump
August 27, 2015  16:08
The special session of Parliament on GST is top on the agenda for the government. The government is waiting for a nod from Anand Sharma (deputy leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha) and Mallikarjuna Kharge (leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha) for a go-ahead.

However, the BJP's top leadership believes even after a nod from both the senior Congress leaders, it is Congress president Rahul Gandhi who will stall the GST.

Insiders who are floor managers are confident that Sonia Gandhi was on board but it is Rahul who stood firm on certain points in the GST Bill.

The government was willing to take those points on GST Bill as an amendment, but the Congress is apprehensive that PM Narendra
Modi will trip up the opposition by quoting P Chidambaram and Pranab Mukherjee's objections to the GST bill.

Insiders say the BJP has succeeded in driving a wedge between old timers in the Congress and the Gandhi family. And even in the Gandhi family there is a clear consensus, which the BJP wants to nurture.
