Govt smells a rat in Mulayam's pro-farmer move

Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav wrote to the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister seeking the withdrawal of PAN cards by farmers who spend cash above Rs 1 lakh.

Mulayam feels that this practice of seeking income details from small and medium farmers will open them up to harassment by income tax authorities.

The PMO and the North Block (which houses the finance ministry) interpret this as a ruse by the Samajwadi Party leader is to block the efforts of the BJP government weed out black money.
