The dangers of reading too much into a bear hug in Kyoto

India and Japan are both embroiled in territorial disputes with China. Both view the growing economic and military heft of their neighbor with apprehension. And both are looking for ways to enhance their security.

So when India's new Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe gave each other a bear hug in Kyoto it was tempting to read into the gesture something more than just a warm personal chemistry.
