More than 10 lakh students are appearing for this year's West Bengal class X board examinations also known as Madhyamik starting from today. On Wednesday, it begins with the first language paper and will end on March 3 with all additional or optional papers.

Conducted by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Examination, this year's test is being conducted in a new format as per the new syllabus. Around 40 per cent of the total questions will be in multiple-choice (MCQ) format.

While the total volume of students taking the examination has come down by 73,000 this year, there has been a significant rise in girls enrolling for the same. While 5.95 lakh girls will write the exams, the number the boys is about 4.8 lakh.

Attributing the success to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's flagship "Kanyashree" scholarship programme, Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said that the project had curbed the menace of young girls dropping out of school.

According to the board officials, there will be around 979 head examiners, while total number of examiners will be around 51,946 this year. Conveying her best wishes to the students Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted, "Best wishes to those who are appearing for Madhyamik examination, 2017."
