The happiness of Vrindavan widows in Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh was indescribable when they returned to their ashram after getting a chance to tie a rakhi on the wrist of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Having gone to the Prime Minister's residence led by Vice-President of social service organization Sulabh International Vineeta Singh, Vrindavan widows Vrinda Dasi, Basanti, Kusum, Dropadi and Sarojini told India Today that they tied rakhis they had made with their own hands on the wrist of their 'brother' PM Narendra Modi and gave him their blessings. They said that they requested PM Modi to take concerted steps for the uplift and empowerment of widows like them. They also apprised him of the appalling condition in which most widows and elderly women were forced to live in old-age homes in the country.

In response to this request, PM Modi promised to see to it at the level of the Central government that widows living in Vrindavan had access to all the basic amenities needed for a comfortable life. The widows were glad to hear this assurance.

Basanti Dasi, who had gone to the PM's house, said that Modi does not make tall and empty promises, but also makes sure that the same are implemented. She said that the Vrindavan widows completely trusted the Prime Minister and believed that the central government would surely do something very soon for them.

Commenting on the PM's way of working, Congress leader Mohd. Sharif Kale said that there is a vast difference between what the PM says and what he does. "Modi had promised Agra the moon when he came to this city in 2013 during his electoral campaign. But three years hence, none of his promises appear to have been implemented. How can people believe that this time Modi will honor his word to the widows. Even this promise made by Modi, like those earlier, is just another example of empty talk."

Kale went on to say that it had been three years since Modi came to power and this was the first time he had promised something for the welfare of hundreds of widows living in a miserable condition in Vrindavan. "How is it possible that a 'brother' was not already aware of the conditions his 'sisters' were living in when this has been repeatedly reported by the media? It clearly appears that Modi's every move is politically motivated. By this Rakshabandhan 'stunt', he is trying to prove himself a well-wisher of the poor women and get any mileage he can from the situation."
