Congress has fired a fresh salvo at the Modi government demanding an FIR against the prime minister for holding a public rally in Haridwar during the ongoing Assembly polls without the requisite permission of the Election Commission.

The Uttarakhand wing of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) today sent a written complaint to the Election Commission of India.

The complaint alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi violated the model code of conduct in Uttarakhand when he held a public rally in Haridwar on February 10.

While Congress workers informed the Chief Election Officer of Uttarakhand about the rally, the BJP, on the other hand, was unable to furnish a substantial answer.

The complaint comes days after the Election Commission filed an FIR against Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat, after BJP complained about the delay in concluding the rally organised by Congress on the same day.

Pradesh Congress Committee president Kishore Upadhyay and party election in-charge Kumari Selja too were booked.

Rahul Gandhi's road show on February 11 covered nearly five assembly constituencies in Haridwar district. However, the road show led to a commotion that inadvertently led to the delay of the road show.

In a response to the FIR against Rahul Gandhi and Uttarakhand CM, Congress has asked the Election Commission to file an FIR against Prime Minister Narendra Modi as according to them he is a perpetrator of a similar offence.

In the complaint the Congress party has requested EC to act upon the below three points:

  • Immediately instruct the state Election Commission to file an FIR against Narendra Modi, JP Nadda, Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank (MP), Madan Kaushik , and other local BJP leaders who participated in the rally on February 10.
  • Order an investigation into the pumping of crores of rupees of unaccounted cash during the election by BJP.
  • Ensure that no postal votes be counted which were cast after the designated time of 5 pm on February 15.

The letter is signed by AICC General Secretary, Ambika Soni, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat, PCC President Uttarakhand Kishore Upadhyay, AICC Secretary (i/c Uttarakhand) Sanjay Kapoor, Uttarakhand Minister Indira Hridyesh, Pradesh Mahila Congress President Sarita Arya, and Pradesh Congress Committee (Minority Cell) president Tahir Hussain.
