Union Minister Uma Bharti believes that if a minister is on duty, it's completely legit for him/her to stop traffic and delay a flight if need be.

Reacting to the ban on lal battis in Punjab, the water resources minister told journalists, "if a minister is out on duty, he can use a red beacon and even delay traffic. If the minister is going for a meeting, even a flight can be delayed for 5-7 minutes," she said.

Bharti said she wanted to address "the trend started by Arvind Kejriwal." She said a meeting being postponed results in decisions being put off 6 months and losses worth 'crores' if a project is delayed.

Defending VIP culture, Bharti said that ministers have to give in writing (to the government) about the nature and purpose of their travel. So, if he/she is not on duty, but going for a personal visit, using a red beacon or delaying traffic should not be allowed. "But if the person is doing official work, all provisions should be made," she said.
