As Sharanya was called in for check-up by the doctor, she had to leave her one-and a-half-year-old daughter Sadhana outside the ward. While she was contemplating how to leave the child behind, a 35-year-old lady and a 45-year-old man approached her saying they would take care of the child till she comes back.

After desperately searching for hours, Sharanya approached the hospital police for help. Police searched the entire premises but couldn't find the couple. Later, when they checked the CCTV footage, they were able to see the couple leaving with the child.

Police have released images of the CCTV footage and have asked people to help them in nabbing the culprits. The authorities have also requested people to be alert and not trust strangers with their children or belongings.

RISING INCIDENTS

Since 2014, statistics show that child kidnapping in Chennai has increased exponentially. Every year, close to 600 children, between the age group 0-15 are reported missing and many of these children remain untraced. The police also don't seem to have a proper system to identify the abductors.

Fear has engulfed the hospital and parents of Sadhana, as reports claim that a mafia is behind these abductions who use children for begging and child prostitution. Children especially living on streets and crowded locations fall easy prey to the kidnappers.
