THE CHANGE IN NUMBERS POST SURGICAL STRIKE

The three month period between July and September last year saw 110 terror related incidents in the strife torn state of Jammu and Kashmir. During which, 34 security personnel and 7 civilians were killed.

11 days after the Lashkar terrorist struck Uri Headquarters, India launched a surgical strike deep inside POK destroying terror camps.

In the three months post the surgical strike, there was a marginal dip in terror strikes.

From October 1 to December 31, MHA states that 87 terror incidents took place, which were 23 less from the earlier quarter.

The number of security personnel killed in the last quarter was 19 which was significantly less but the civilians killed remained almost unchanged at 6.

MoS Home Affairs Hansraj Gangaram Ahir's answer was in response to a question raised by Sukhram Singh Yadav, Rajya Sabha MP.

Ahir said that there were reports of local people in certain pockets coming out during cordons and pelting stones on security forces to disrupt the operation to flush out militants in the area. However, a figure on such incidents wasn't released.

He also informed the upper house that the government is taking several measures to bring the youth into the mainstream.

These measures include employment for youth in Jammu and Kashmir, besides skill development for school and college dropouts.

SECURITY STRONGER UNDER MODI REGIME

In a response to a question raised by Prabhat Jha, the MoS Home Affairs also told the Parliament that the internal security of the country had become stronger in the last two and a half years ever since Narendra Modi took over as the Prime Minister of the country.

The efforts of the Central and State governments was stated as the reason behind the stronger security scenario of the country.

Ahir also listed figures of the Left Wing Extremism to prove part of this claim as demanded by a Member of Parliament in Rajya Sabha.

"There has been improvement in the Left Wing Extremism (LWE) scenario in the country. Comparison of violence data of 2013 with 2016 reflects that there has been an overall 7 percent reduction in violent incidents ( From 1136 down to 1048) and 30 percent reduction ( from 397 in 2013 to 278 in 2016) in LWE related deaths. Over the same period, there has been a 43 percent reduction (115 to 65) in casualties among security personnel and 122 percent increase (100 to 122) in elimination of armed Maoist cadres."
