At a time when the state government is calling itself the most farmer friendly government by implementing a 100 per cent crop loan waiver in Telangana, ground reality tells a different truth.

Data prepared by NGO Rayathu Swarajya Vedika (RSV) reveals a whooping 3,026 farmer suicide in newly formed state of Telangana since its inception. According to the NGO, whihc has been working alongside farmers in the state, in there were 792 suicides in 2014, 1147 in 2015, 784 suicides in 2016 and between January and June this year, there were 294 suicides in the state.

In Telangana, farmers are usually involved with cotton, red gram and chili cultivation. However, due to bumper crop flooding markets prices have fallen sharply.

What made the situation for Telangana's farmers worse is that in 2014, cotton farmers of the state switched to growing chili after cotton prices crashed. However, with market yards being filled with a bumper crop, chili prices have fallen as well.
