Veteran Congress leader and former Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi has hit out against the Centre on the Rohingya Muslims issue, calling its stand in-compassionate.

Accusing the Centre of discriminating between refugees on the basis of religion, Gogoi said, "We are a land of Mahatma Gandhi and Ashoka, must show compassion and tolerance. Should reach out to the refugees who have been turned away from their country."

"Even Vivekananda said that we must provide shelter to all those who have been prosecuted," he further added.

Exposing how the Government of India is polarising the society unabashedly on the lines of religion, Gogoi said that security threat, if any from Rohingyas should be probed and proved.

"Why generalise? Prove the threat and put the culprits behind bars instead of accusing all Rohingyas," the three-time Assam Chief Minister said.

VIOLATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS

The erstwhile Assam CM maintains, "Categorising women and children, who are the hardest hit in this mass exodus, as possible terror suspects is violation of basic ethos of this country."
