"High Court has put it in the subtlest way possible. Jayalalithaa and EPS claimed to have closed 1000 shops as chief ministers as a step towards implementing prohibition. Yet, look at the commotion now!," said Bala, a resident of Chennai who was arrested for protesting against TASMAC.

Chennai, Thiruvannamalai, Madurai, Coimbatore and Kancheepuram have also had people protesting against the opening of liquor shops in residential areas in the recent past.

Replying to a state government's plea on Thursday, the Madras High Court said it is to

  • reconsider the decision to open more TASMAC shops
  • get the opinion of people, while relocating liquor shops
  • adhere to the guidelines of the Supreme Court regarding the management of TASMAC shops
  • welcome liquor prohibition considering the welfare of the people

Thereby, a closing petition was filed by the Tamil Nadu government.
