A man lost control of his car after reportedly being startled by a leopard in Tamil Nadu's Nilgiris district on Wednesday, and held up rail traffic between Coonoor and Ooty for an hour after the vehicle fell onto a track, the Tamil daily Thina Mani reported.

The 50-year-old, Sundaravelan, was injured and later hospitalized in Ooty (or Udhagamandalam - one of Tamil Nadu's best-known hill stations), the report said.

Police and railway authorities removed the car from the track using a crane, Thina Mani's report added.

In other encounters between motorists and leopards, the big cats have ended up being the unlucky ones.

A Hindustan Times report from January says that in Maharashtra alone, as many as 16 leopards died in "high-speed" accidents.
