Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today asked Transport Minister Diwakar Raote to re-look into the policy of 'no helmet no fuel policy,' following a strong opposition.

On July 21, in a bid to tighten existing traffic laws, Transport Minister Diwakar Raote made the announcement in the assembly of the new rule to promote road safety and save lives lost in accidents - no helmet, no petrol.

OPPOSITION OBJECTS

Objecting to the initiative, NCP legislator and former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar raised the issue in the lower house today. Pawar said, "We are not against helmet, it is needed for the safety of an individual. But how can the government deny fuel to anyone in the name of safety?"

"Tomorrow someone may start a business of renting out helmets outside fuel stations, will that ensure safety?" Pawar quipped.

FADNAVIS ARGUMENT

Responding to the demand, CM Devendra Fadnavis said the basis of the initiative is to implement road safety and saving valuable lives. Fadnavis, however, assured the house that that he will ask the Transport Minister to relook into the matter and find a way out so that people do not suffer.

The move had ran into controversy immediately after its announcement. Riders had opposed the move calling it impractical. Even petrol pump owners across Maharashtra has opposed the move and have threatened to go a strike against it.
